In 1994, Lucky and Lyn Callen started Mettowee Valley Farm, one of the earlier alpaca farms in New England. From the beginning, emphasis was on the development of animals, not only with positive conformation characteristics, but also with strong emphasis on fiber quality. Through an internal breeding program and the purchase of new bloodlines; the farm ultimately grew to more than 80 alpacas, with roots primarily in Peru.
In 2006, Lucky and Lyn moved to Dorset (ten miles down Rt. 30) and I'm fortunate to continue the journey they started. The farm, renamed Marlee Farm Alpacas
(named after our first granddaughter) sits on a hilltop with views of Haystack Mountain to the north and the slopes of Stratton to the south. The 55 acre farm borders the Mettowee River.
The purchase of Mettowee Valley Farm has finally allowed me to consolidate the alpacas I agisted at Spruce Ridge Farm (my thanks and eternal gratitude to Steve and Jeff for their knowledge guidance and friendship) with the 44 alpacas resident here.
First, the sale of breeding stock and pet quality animals to those wishing to start their own ventures or to diversify their bloodlines.
Second, a stud service where Marlee Farm Alpacas' herdsires are available for breeding.
And finally, our retail business, The Little Alpaca Shop, where top line alpaca garments and accessories are available.
Breeding and caring for these wonderful animals with their inquisitive nature is gratifying and a new lifestyle experience. Alpacas are good travelers and relate particularly well to children.
